Oxley Woods Locality
Oxley Woods is located to the south-western edge of the “New City” of Milton Keynes, as part of the Oxley Park estate, situated within the parish of Shenley Church End.
This unique position places residents within walking distance of several established woods, open countryside and traditional villages, yet only a few minutes from Central Milton Keynes.
We are served by the No.2 bus service which connects Westcroft in the south-western corner of Milton Keynes to Newport Pagnell in the north-east, via central Milton Keynes.
You can find Oxley Woods on Google Maps, and Bing Maps.
Nature and Environment
Oxley Woods is within easy walking distance of three mature woodland areas in Milton Keynes. Oakhill Wood, Shenley Wood, and Howe Park Wood.
Oxley Park contains an ancient hay meadow, Oxley Mead, which is a 3.7 hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest, which along with the aforementioned Howe Park Wood form the only two such sites in Milton Keynes.
To the west of Oxley Park, on the border of Aylesbury Vale, in the direction of the nearby village of Whaddon lies the North Bucks Way. The North Bucks Way is a 33 mile walking route established in 1972 by the Ramblers Association running from The Ridgeway in the south to Cosgrove and the Grand Union Canal in the north.
Also of note nearby in Shenley Church End is Shenley Toot, “comprising of a complex of earthworks covering an area of approximately 4 hectares, including a large motte like mound after which the site is named”. You can see more on The National Heritage website.
Closer to home Oxley Woods has a linear park running along its southern flank maintained by The Parks Trust, home to the Oxley Woods Big Lunch, and a mature hedgerow to the west. Hawk type birds have been spotted flying overhead, there are owls locally, and there appears to be many varied winged species living close by, not least in the rookery at Ash Pole Spinney which is just to the east of Oxley Woods on Oxley Park.
