All the time, please.
We’ve had a strange problem with some of our lights. The Oxley Woods eco homes are fitted with low energy down lighters in all rooms, well all apart from some of the earlier builds, apparently. They’re supposed to be about 70% more efficient than regular down-lighters, most of them in our house appear to be Aurora branded 11w, 2700k temperature (warm white) GU10 type down-lighters.
There are a few downsides to the choice of lights in these houses. First of all, they’re supposed to be eco homes. Now, when you see that they’ve replaced the down-lighters with low-energy equivalents you’d think that’s a great move, and you’d be correct in thinking so. But when you see the number of lights, you realise that it’s also a very strong case of form over function. Our kitchen area has five lights, our living room has 12, the the bedrooms either four or six. It’s serious lighting overkill. It looks fantastic, but not really very eco conscious, and I dread the day we have to replace them, a household total of 75 lights!
Anyway, I digress. The problem we had specifically was that after a few weeks in the house, I noticed one bulb wasn’t working on the top floor landing (where there is a total of four installed). So, we had a replacement fitted FOC.
More recently, I was sure only three were working again, but when my wife checked later, all seemed fine. Then the next day, only two bulbs lit. Then later again three, then the next morning, all four?!
So, now assured I wasn’t going mad, we had the electrician pay a visit. He’s replaced all four bulbs earlier this week, and so far so good, they’re all lit, whenever they need to be. IF they go mad again, the next planned move is to replace the holders and check wiring, if that fails, the electrician thinks we should call a priest.

[...] One of our low energy “8000 hour” bulbs has stopped working already. See here also. [...]
Did replacing the lights solve your problem? I’m in the unfortunate position that I moved in before their lighting change, so I have many 50w (MR16) halogen bulbs in my house. I have rectified this a bit by reducing some to 20w changing some 1.5w LED’s (which don’t really light the room, but look OK, and I found some of the rooms too bright anyway) and in the kitchen where good light is needed I have added Philips Master Line Energy Saving bulbs, I went for the 20w versions that give out 35w’s of light, and they are good. But now having the Philips bulbs in for a few months, one of them has started flashing and then went completely for 2 two days, then came back fine for a while and is now flashing again. I haven’t got round to swapping some bulbs over to see if it is a bulb issue, so it may well be, and if a swap of bulbs sorted your similar problem out then thats probably all I need to do.
Hello,
Strangely enough replacing all the bulbs resolved the problem, nothing since at all.
I still find it odd they didn’t put these bulbs in all the houses, considering their “eco” credentials!
Thanks, guess I’ll go buy some more bulbs then see what happens.
One of the first things I said after moving in was ‘How can they call this eco friendly’ we have the smaller 2 bed house and had 25 50w halogens and 13 of the 11w GU10 fittings you have (if I remember rightly, too lazy to get up and count them) which is insane, the living room alone had 9 50w bulbs so this one room where most of your time is spent was using more electricity then all the lights in my old un-eco friendly house.
Our outside light has also gone mad lately, not sure if it’s the sensor or the bulb. It’s ugly and too bright anyway, but it’s got itself out of the habit of switching itself on at night.
