Life in an Oxley Woods eco house

You know you live in a cool place when you can buy a teatowel with your house on it.

October 2, 2011

It is claimed that many people don’t like the look of Oxley Woods houses, at least at first glance. We residents know that the truth is different, as we get to see the admiring looks of people passing by.

Of course it’s only natural that the residents here will champion our houses until the cows come home. After all, we’re the people who know that once you’ve experienced the natural light, ample spaces and clean lines of the designs it is difficult to contemplate living in a standard house again.

But of course it is always nice to have our point of view backed up by external experts. We knew that we lived in an iconic location, a haven of architectural brilliance in a sea of brick. And now we have further proof that we were right.

First there was the BBC, interviewing Gill for Radio 4 Moneybox. Then we had a visit from a TV production company contemplating locations for a possible series to be called ‘Living in the Future’.

But now we have something much more tangible:

Teatowels.

Mugs.

Trays.

Coasters and placemats.

They are funky, fun and fantastic. Just like our houses.

And if you know someone who lives here, now you know what to get them for Christmas.

All items are available from the stylish People Will Always Need Plates, featured as part of their Eclectic Avenue series.

Hat tip: Rosie, for picking up a copy of Homes and Antiques magazine.

Snippets from the life from a mother of two living in Oxley woods.

August 31, 2011

I am a mother too two young children, a little girl who is coming up to three and a little boy who is one on sunday! We have lived in our little eco house for nearly two whole years. I have offered to write some blog posts in order to present a view of Oxley woods via a different set of eyes. I can not promise to blog often, or make much sense as I am no writer but I can provide an honest account of my life as a stay at home mum living in Oxley :-)

Our house is still very much a work in progress, I am a housing association tenant and the people that had the house for the short time before we moved in really didn’t look after  it so well!! It has taken a while to get used to the lack of storage (no loft) but i have become entirely creative with my solutions to that problem. so far so good!

Most recently we have had the fantastic play equipment installed over on the park, before this was all put in i used to waddle (heavily pregnant) up and down the park land pushing my toddler on her trike. It used to make me feel very lucky to have such a nice ‘green’ space on our door step. I get a bit overwhelmed with the ‘ickky city’ side of Milton Keynes so to have lovely spaces like this is awfully important to us as a family. Now we have these play parks scattered from the pond at the end of my street (Lorre mews) all the way down to near the tesco shop, it is just amazing.  We play over there daily, some times several times a day. Obviously i am just supervising and have no interest at all in playing on the super amazing tall red spider wed climby thingy…

I have been really surprised at the huge amount of children playing out there. Where were they all hiding last summer?! I am also yet to encounter a ‘horrible child’ I think most parents can relate to going along to toddler groups etc and encountering a brat baby. There is usually at least one! My little bold baby has been treated with nothing but courtesy and respect from the other children playing outside.

Watching the area and community develop is something special, it is the most friendly place I have ever lived! I can’t wait to spend many more years here.

Egg-cellent news from a neighbour

August 9, 2011

Yep, couldn’t avoid that pun, as much as I tried (which wasn’t very hard, to be honest).

Great news! You can now purchase free range eggs in Oxley Woods. They’re not from chickens that live on the estate, but they come from very close by and are cared for by our neighbours. So there’s low food mileage and supporting a small local enterprise providing at least two good reasons to buy.

For more details on how to place an order, please see the forum classifieds, here: Free Range Eggs For Sale.

Oxley Park parks arrive!

July 24, 2011

Children (and grown ups) have been overjoyed and over-exercised this week as finally Oxley Park can live up to its name as several of the play areas along the linear parks which run through the estate opened up for play time, just in time for the summer holidays!

It’s been absolutely terrific to see children young and old out and about, and our kids have met many new friends as they’ve made their way from park to park every day.

Apparently plans were slightly changed after some objections from residents elsewhere on the estate, which means we have a play park, pond and parkland outside our property now, and it’s absolutely brilliant. The way the play areas are dotted through the estate makes any foot journey more fun, if MUCH longer, for anyone with kids, or a bit of adventure and fun in their souls.

Brilliant news all round.
